General Overview Every business on the Internet has a domain name. Either a business owns their own domain name, leases space on another business' domain name, or shares space on an existing domain name. What are Domain Names Domain names are Internet addresses. They serve the same function that the street address for your business does. If a customer knows your domain name, they can go directly to your website. If not, they must find you through the search engines. The top level of a
domain name is the extension that categorises organisations by type. These
are found at the end of the domain name. The most common of these is the
extension .com . The national domain top level for the United Kingdom
is .uk For business purposes, it's best to reserve a domain name that ends in either the extension .com, .co.za or .net Since most names in the .com extension are already taken, you may find it necessary to choose one of the other top level domain extensions. Keep in mind, some of the top level domains cannot be used by businesses (i.e. .mil is for the US military). The categories that can be used by most businesses are: .com .net .org .co.za .plc.uk .ltd.uk and .org.uk . Choosing a domain
Name When thinking of your domain name, keep the following in mind: a domain must begin and end with a letter or number, the domain system is NOT case sensitive (it doesn't matter if you use capital letters or lower case letters), a shorter domain name is easier for your customer to remember. To reserve a domain name, a server identification must be provided. If your website is not ready to be placed on a server, a domain name can still be reserved for you. Once reserved, your domain name can be moved to any server you choose once your website is completed. Terms and Conditions
